The Goucher College Poll was conducted from Sept. 8 to 12, 2022. It surveyed 1,008 Maryland residents from which 748 likely voters were identified. Those who were considered likely voters were asked for their candidate preferences in the upcoming statewide general election contests this November, with the majority showing a larger favorability toward Democratic candidates.
The poll concluded that Democratic gubernatorial candidate Wes Moore is viewed favorably by a majority of likely voters in the upcoming election, with a 53% favorable rating over Republican candidate Dan Cox, who has a 30% favorable rating.
While 15% of voters were undecided, Maryland Attorney General Democratic nominee Anthony Brown holds 53% of polled voters. Republican nominee Michael Peroutka holds 31%.
The US Senate options leaned toward Democratic nominee Chris Van Hollen with a 56% favorability, and 33% favorability for the Republican nominee Chris Chaffee. Only 8% of voters for the US Senate election are currently undecided.
The State Comptroller election has Democratic nominee Brooke Lierman leading with 48%, with 35% favorability for Republican nominee Barry Glassman and 16% of voters undecided.
“The Democratic ticket is in a strong position to sweep the statewide contests this cycle. The Democratic nominee Wes Moore is viewed favorably by a majority of state voters, and perceptions of his mix of progressive and moderate politics aligns with how many Maryland voters view themselves,” says Mileah Kromer, Director of the Sarah T. Hughes Center for Politics at Goucher College. “Dan Cox’s endorsement from former President Donald J. Trump and his own political views secured his primary win but remain at odds with the Democratic and independent voters he needs to build a winning coalition".
